Assembly type connectors also excel in low volume situations, where the versatility to use the same connector with multiple different wire diameters or lengths is beneficial. Overmolded cable assemblies are typically preferred when cable lengths and connector configurations are well defined, and volume is sufficient to justify a dedicated solution.

How to choose between solder cup and screw terminal assembly connectors?

Screw terminal connectors allow conductors to be mechanically secured using terminal screws, simplifying installation when soldering equipment or expertise is not available. To accommodate the larger terminals, there is a limit to the number of contacts that can fit within the assembly.

Terminating with solder cup assembly connectors require conductors to be soldered directly to the contacts, providing a secure permanent connection. This needs to be done with access to specialized equipment and requires more training to accomplish. One benefit to the connectors that utilize solder cups is that the metal shells allow for shielding.
